Pass Me That Piano

Pass Me That Piano by Danny

Pass Me That Piano

This is a stupid phrase,
I know I use it all the time to confuse and annoy children.
It was originally a throw away comment off a George Carlin record from the early 70’s referring to phrases you don’t hear much.
This got me thinking along the lines of Lucan’s “Television, The Drug Of The Nation” Challenge.
Back before Reality TV became so popular back in the dark and damp 1970’s there were television shows that were so truly pathetic and painful that they make today’s television delightful.
These shows, predominantly from the US were called Situation Comedies or SitCom’s.
These awful monstrosities often had an annoying character that had a catch phrase. The more popular the show became, the more that show depended on the Character’s catch phrase to hold the show together or even finish the episode off.
Examples include:
Welcome Back Kotter: “ Wha?”,
“Mister Kot-tieyer” “Ooh Ooh!” (Wave hand like a school child)

Happy Days “Heyyyy!”
“Coooool!”

Different Strokes “What choo talking about Willis?”

The Good Times “Dyn-O-Mite”

The Poms were just as guilty with
Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. “ Oh Betty”
or
On the Buses “I’ll get you Butler”

These catch phrases would be repeated all over the school yard and work place by unoriginal wags looking for a cheap laugh.
So I made this Tee Shirt in the hope if this kind of television has a resurgence- and mark my words it will again one day. I’m at least on the front foot for some quick sales.
.
.
Or maybe I’m just going surreal

Well as i like idiotic sayings – this is mighty fine.
I tell my kids I laughed my neck off (then continue laughing at that) and favor Bobs your Auntie, so Pass me that Piano – makes sense.

Guilty…..I still say some of these, and some. Although alot have been replaced by some really good movie quotes.
You’re on to something here I think Danny!

    I enjoy his red eyes.

Why do you like to confuse and annoy children?

How about one from the ‘80s like The A Team’s ‘I like it when a plan comes together’ but you can’t say it without a Monte Cristo No.2 wedged between your teeth.

And then there are the more recent Aussie ones like Kylie Mole and Kath and Kim now.

    But you are effluent Kimmy.

I continue to use “Oh how embarrassment!” thanks to Effie.

Why do you like to confuse and annoy children?
    Doesn’t everyone? It’s called payback.
I actually have used this phrase several times, I have some micro keyboards at home.
But I always refer to the big old upright when I say it to the children.

Oh I’m showing my vintage when I say I always liked “I’m sorry I’ll read that again” and the fireman (Tim Brooke-Taylor) who says “There’s no fire without a smoke”. Probably completely unknown since it was the 1960s and RADIO. Another fave is “When you throw a stone into a bucket of lemmings the ripples spread outwards”. But Pass me a Piano Please is pretty darn good too.
    :o)

Have you seen any episodes of ‘Extras’ ? Mr R.Gervais is with you on the catch phrase thingy. Although I seem to recall that you aren’t a huge fan of British Comedy ? Or do you just say that to upset Lucan, cos that’s what I’d do.

    Anyhoo, good.

@ Lucan. Why do we love to confuse and annoy children?? Because WE CAN!

Ah Mr Danny – this is wonderful …..

My favourite annoyance is a response to “Muuuum, I’m hungry/bored/tired/thirsty” to which the reply is ….”Hello – I’m your mother – pleased to meet you”. This is enough to set the little fella postal now …. :)

Oh the Extras was fun. And yes that was an annoying catchphrase.
I hadn’t noticed you trying to upset me sjem, you must try harder. In fact I don’t think I’d noticed you at all.

    I love British Comedy
The Young Ones, Bottom and The Vicar of Dibbley, helped shaped my view on life.
How can you ignore sjem Lucan?
When you’re the same people. Shhhheeeesh!
Ooops, did I say that outside or inside my headfingers.

Bottom was genius, particularly the live shows. Blackadder goes Forth is another personal favourite. Danny we have to stop talking to ourselves, people will stare. And I am not sjem, sjem lives in my basement and I ignore him to prevent him playing up any more than he already does. OR ELSE HE’LL GET THE HOSE AGAIN.

The Comic Strip guys and girls were always worth a gander and all. Particularly the ‘Five go mad on Mescaline’, ‘Mr Jolly lives next door’ and ‘The Bullshitters’ episodes.

First of all Lucan, by telling me you didn’t notice me means that you had to have noticed me because you had to notice me inorder to respond to me.

Second, I don’t know what hose you’re reffering to. Unless of-course it’s in relation to that incident at last year’s annual gathering of the Midnight Crochet Faucet Club in which case you’re quite right and I have apologised to all parties involved. Except yours.

Thirdly, so desperate are you for some company to fill your whiskey filled evenings of delirium, ranting and violent self-harming exploits that you offered your basement to me as accommodation, REMEMBER ? By the way you owe me rent, I shan’t stay another day until I get it. You’d best sell a few more t-shirts.

And control those headfingers Danny or you may end up like a certain t-shirt of yours…

That guy looks really cool on black, change the text to white and you’ll have an even betterer tee I reckon.

George Carlin said this. It was actually, “Hand Me That Piano”. I’ve repeated this line, like a lot of Carlin, for over 20 years.
