I want to present a series of oil paintings depicting New Zealand native bird life, calling on traditions of bird illustration that go back to the 19th Century, but personalising them with a quirky, modern touch.
I began with a South Island kokako (presumed extinct) peering out of foliage, wearing headphones. This is a bird that was one of the country’s most renowned songsters; and though some still claim to hear it from time to time it has largely been silenced. So I have depicted this bird listening to music, rather than creating it. We can hope that the South Island kokako is still out there, and one day we may hear its song again.

Other pieces in this series will include birds such as takahe, huia and pukeko.
I’m trying to bring a touch of humour to a subject that is usually depicted in a somber, gloomy manner – not to belittle the issue but to provoke fresh patterns of thought.
