Mulga Parrot (Psephotus varius) - Point Lowly Peninsula, South Australia by

This is a fine example of a male Mulga Parrot settling down in the late afternoon to roost. This fella was accompanied by (presumably) his mate, and another pair. Their chirps are gentle, similar to that of a Musk Lorikeet or an Adelaide Rosella. The male’s colouration is startling in flight, with it’s bright red rump and wild aqua, blue and green plumage. Unfortunately these birds’ habitat on the Point Lowly Peninsula is at risk, with the area marked for imminent industrialisation. An effort is being made to rezone the area for recreation and tourism to instead celebrate its natural assets. Find out more at Cuttlefish Country
