Sulphur Crested Cockatoo - Science Park, South Australia by

Just a short walk from my studio at danimations, this Sulphur Crested Cockatoo was resting in the shade by the Kaurna Cultural Centre, Science Park. As we checked each other out, it raised it’s comb plumage and a gust of wind ruffled through its feathers. While the bird appears to look content in this portrait, it had a nasty open chest wound and looked a bit worse for wear. I wonder if the wound was self inflicted (ie, from pecking at mites or ticks of some sort) inflicted by other birds establishing a ‘pecking order’ or was caused by something else altogether.

Wow Dan what a beautiful bird! What a beautiful shot too, fabulous detail!

  • Thanks! Yes, one of my favourite birds the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. We are lucky to have a flock of these who roost in a park near our home in the warmer months… at it’s peak the flock is about 30 birds strong
