Meadow Argus Butterfly - Junonia villida

Dan & Emma Monceaux

Kensington Gardens, Australia

Artist's Description

This was my first sighting of a Meadow Argus (Junonia villida) in Horsnell Gully Conservation Park and my second sighting of the species in total this season. It was the 9th of March 2011 and there had been light rain in the morning. I knew the Coach Road ridge at Horsnell Gully to be a summertime butterfly hotspot, and also knew from experience that days of sun interspersed with light rain are perfect for photographing butterflies. Butterflies are often unable to escape the rain, and bask in the sun to dry their wings as pictured.
