Meadow Argus Butterfly - Junonia villida by

This was my first sighting of a Meadow Argus (Junonia villida) in Horsnell Gully Conservation Park and my second sighting of the species in total this season. It was the 9th of March 2011 and there had been light rain in the morning. I knew the Coach Road ridge at Horsnell Gully to be a summertime butterfly hotspot, and also knew from experience that days of sun interspersed with light rain are perfect for photographing butterflies. Butterflies are often unable to escape the rain, and bask in the sun to dry their wings as pictured.

Conservation and creativity are our two strongest passions. Our nature photography extends into online video at NatureScope . We’re also currently producing a documentary film called Cuttlefish Country . All purchases of our work will go directly towards the film’s production. The film is due for release in 2013.

Beauty! Terrific color & detail! Excellent capture, Dan!

  • Thanks Daniel… this was the best of a good 15 or so frames of this subject. I was really lucky with the timing, weather, landing spot, light…

Perfect. What a gorgeous insect this is
I’m sure you will remember this day as I remember seeing my first & possibly last, Camberwell Beauty, Sept 17, 2006!

  • Do you have these in the UK, or did you see yours in a butterfly house somewhere? The color and pattern on the Meadow Argus is lovely, thanks for your comment… and great to meet a fellow butterfly conservationist… I’m a member of Butterfly Conservation South Australia
