My Mother, My Earth

The skies open violently above me
Shattering the stillness of shadowy moonlight
With the thunderous echo of a thousand droplets
Charging towards their mother Earth

Each drop slaps my cheeks hard
Tiny little fists beating my face
Pounding nature’s glory into my core
As I stand between them and their Earth

The rain drives into my upturned face
And with arms outstretched
I welcome the deafening chaos into my soul
Cleanse me

As the dry earth below softens and welcomes
I feel it creep around my bare feet like thick seductive fingers
Inviting me to curl my toes in its depths
To feel our Mother Earth soften and sigh

Here between the Sky and the Soil
I feel my body pulled in all directions
Longing to be everywhere with our Mother
From her midnight skies to her golden sands

But I am merely a thread in Her marvelous tapestry
A minute detail lost in the expanse of Her glory
And so I stand mutely knowing that while singularly ordinary
I belong to a much grander design

As my skin trembles under the slowing rain
And the muddy earth clings where I stand
I feel cleansed and renewed knowing that now and forever
I will be Hers and She will always be mine.

My Mother, My Earth by

Inspired by the monsoon, by the wind, the rain, the frogs singing their delight and the moon shining down on it all.
