A Voice Unto Eternity

Stale air pushes past the stifling gag in hissing whispers
Gasping, gasping
But the thin air is barely enough to trace the inside of my throat
Fill the shallowest of breaths in my desperate lungs

The blind cuts into my temple and I am thankful
It hides my prison
The source of a foul curtain that hangs all around me
Its putrid thickness closing in and swallowing me

I long to stretch, to paw, to scream … yet I cannot
I am bound like a swine
Discarded
Constrained in every conceivable way

As I sharply suck the stale air through my bindings
I resign my fate with one final thought
They cannot bind my mind … it is my essence
I will be free

My spirit can traverse the steepest of cliffs
Bathe in the most secluded of riverbeds
My mind will explore the depths of the universe
Uncontained, unrestrained and uncensored

I may leave this shell, this heavy mortal container
They may defeat my slender, shaken body
But my essence will last infinite lifetimes
They can silence my voice but they will deal with the choir

It is a snowball building on a mountain top
Collecting momentum
Suddenly a thousand voices ring clear through the hills
“We shall be silenced no more”

Value each voice, each idea, each offering
It may be the one that inspires a thousand others
It may inspire just one
It might just be the flickering candle a lost soul is looking for

You’d need not agree but you should at least listen. Each voice has value and merit and once silenced, a thousand may just spring up in their defence.
