Prickly Yellow Pod by

These weeds grow all over south florida, I’ve seen them ever since I was a kid but have no idea what they are called. Small yellow flowers turn to soft prickly yellow pods that eventually burst into an amazing display of huge, juicy red seeds. Anyone know what they’re called?

Wonderful capture, I dont think I saw any of these when I was there before. wonderful display !!

  • LOL … these things are weeds and grow all over the place in unkept areas. Undesirable to most but pretty amazing looking when they are left to mature. Thanks for stopping by sean and taking time to comment. * Coy *

I think these belong to the bittergourd family, those r usually a bit bigger than these and also have the same red seeds when ripe.In India we have a whole lot of recipes made with them (bitter gourd). But not sure whether these can be eaten.

  • Not familiar with bittergourds and I am not so sure these can be eaten either … I do know that insects seem to love the juicy red seeds when they are ripe, they must be sweet. * Coy *

how wonderful !!!!. if you only knew.. we .. my Larry and I . have been hours looking this one up .. we have seen them hundreds of times in the cow pastures.. dont know the name yet.. but we will find out hopefully:)..

  • Yes … I’ve tried looking them up as well, they are everywhere this time of year, not sure why no one knows what they are called. Seems like I heard people calling the Maypop’s when I was a kid but when you look that up it is something totally different. * Coy *

Hi coy.. guess what I… found it :) !

check this out.. they are Balsam apples

  • Bingo that’s exactly what they are Isa … I’ve posted several photos of these in every stage here starting with the flower … I still havent figured out how to add photos to my descriptions yet or I would group the whole collection together. Thanks for the link … which is another thing I havent figured out yet … I’m so used to Blogger formatt anything different just seems difficult or at least time consuming. I’ll eventually get it figured out. * Coy *
