Here it is, my second ever watercolour. It was a challenge to work with just a single colour, especially when trying to vary the tone in any way. As with the last one, feedback or suggestions for what to try next are most appreciated

Here are my watercolour experiments so far

I really like that you’re trying this new medium, Damien. I love anything to do with the Bman. Can’t critique it as I don’t know enough about watercolours but I reckon it looks great. :)

  • Thanks Anne.. yeah, I’ve wanted to play with watercolours for a while, and obviously I mentioned it enough because my wife Cheryl bought me a set for my birthday.. It’s really interesting, the hardest part I’ve found is not being able to go back over it with white pencil to add highlights like I can in my digital work. I don’t know if there’s a media that works on watercolours, but pencil certainly doesn’t. Still, changing things up a bit has been really refreshing for me, I find I’m getting excited about creating work again when there isn’t the onus of hoping it’ll sell

The only thing that I know about WC, is that I know what I like. I really like this. Well, I also know how difficult WCs are to pull off. This is stunning piece of work. Happy Birthday, however late I may be. Cheers, Rusty

  • Hey thanks Rusty, and happy birthday to you too! Did you get my package?

That came out great man! I love me a good greywash, and this is all balanced perfectly.

  • Thanks so much mate, that means a lot. Especially from a master of the wash like yourself, I don’t mind saying that this piece takes no small inspiration from Matthew Dunn :)

Holy shit, D, did I not acknolwldge reciept of my alter-ego, “Pedro the Manic”? His postcard is stuck stuck into my mirror on the side. (you know, where there is the little space for doing just such things. He’s right below Our Virgin of Guadalupe, healer of all ills. Pedro 3d sits on the little overhang on my bed, from which my book selves roll in and out. He rests against The diaries & Letters of of Kafka, Kierkegaaard, Hemingway and John Cheever. These are my go to books when I need inspiration. My friend, I cannot thank you enough. My current screen saver is the one where you picture me plunging into the abyss of insanity. Also, as soon as I collect a couple more—since you get 20% off when you get to 8-I’ll have an order in for more post cards. I’m so sorry that I failed to acknowledge your kindness. Really, All I have to to is to look up from my screen, and there is Pedro, saying, “Hey man, work or fuck of you piece of sheeeeet!” It’s all the motivation I need generally. Thank you so much, my friend.

    Cheers, Rusty

Again, please pardon my failure to acknowledge. I thought I had sent you a piece asking whether or not I could do a journal entry praising your work and kindness. Shows what I remember. I feel like such a fucking cad. Sorry, friend!

  • Do not stress at all. I remember that message, so the fault no doubt lies with me. I am just happy to hear he made it to you through the mail :)

LOL, I can see where the page buckled. Bloody annoying, innit? But you’ve done a great job with the paint, and I think limiting it to grey tones was a good decision.

  • Yeah, it’s not as noticeable on the original so maybe I just need to squash it in the scanner with a book on top or something.
And thanks :) As much as anything it was a challenge.. I found it quite difficult to get much variety in tone without going to really dark.
Now I just have to think about what to do next..

I have the buckling problem with most of my work. It drives me nuts on Valentine’s Dei, because I don’t use particularly thick paper (it’s all done in a sketchbook, so I can keep it all together). Squashing it with a heavy book is precisely the method I use :)
Even then, it usually requires a little cleaning up.
