Even Monsters Like To Draw

This is my entry for the Drawing Day Warm Up Exercise Challenge over at Drawing Day

I decided in the spirit of drawing day I’d forgo my usual technique and have a bit of a play in painter. It was very interesting, you could almost feel the paint covering the canvas, and with the wacom tablet it was dead easy to use.

If you’re interested in seeing the sketch I started with I’ve posted it on my blog over here

Otherwise, I hope you’ll join the Drawing Day group and get your Draw on on Saturday :)

Even Monsters Like To Draw belongs to the following groups:

Art and Stories Made For Children, Character Development, Friends of RedBubble, International Superheroes of Drawing, Illustration and World Domination, Out of the Blue (75%+ Blue), Riginals and Vibrant and Vivid Color Available for sale as

I love using the tablet in photoshop.. time I did it again! Have only done it a few times but each time have loved it. this was my first go at it. thanks for the heads up, incentive and inspiration :D I haven’t looked into the cost of Corel.. is it pretty pricey?
Very cool monster you’ve created here – really great work especially considering it’s your first foray into it!! :D

  • Damien Masoncommunity host replied

Yeah, it is – $800 AU. You can get a free trial though. There’s also a cheaper version called Painter Essentials but I haven’t looked at how that differs from the full version. Really all I need is a few good brushes, so it might be something to look into later.

I was reading “A Nightmare in my Closet” to my son last night… do you remember that book An old school HUGE favourite in our household. (it was my brother’s all time favourite book).
This guy (he really needs a name… anything come to your mind when you look at him?) could definitely be a long lost cousin that lives in the closet… But I think he’d be the one that would come in and talk your ear off and be the friendly, cool monster that doesn’t like to scare… just be friends and do a bit of colouring in or drawing :D

$800 is a lot of money isn’t it! I’m still on an old version of photoshop cause I can’t afford the upgrade. Oh the software we all would buy if we won the lottery :D LOL

Heh, generally I get my wife Cheryl to name the odd creations that come out of my head. I’ll get her on to this one.
I was having a look around for when the trial runs out.. Painter Essentials is on eBay for around $40, so i might grab a trial of that and make sure it does what I need it to.

Look forward to hearing Cheryl’s name. I love that your wife name’s your creations… something so lovely and artistically romantic about that! :)
Thanks for the tip re trial software. I’m gonna check out similar things.

Hi Damien. Your trip into Painter was well worthwhile. I think this is your best piece. The expression is just right and really fits the monster – what I would call ‘friendly simpleton. Painter is sooooo much fun and there are some really good progs for converting bitmap art into vector these days that I wonder why anyone with a few basic drawing skills would mess with vector programs. Sorry all you vector addicts! ;)
