[This is an authorized portrait]
I started into photography in January 2008.
6 months later I was hitting the streets trying to document the lives of those we stumble upon and avoid everyday.
So I started the Poverty Series.
My aim is to reveal their humanity, to know these people’s story and make us realize they once had a family, a functional life and it takes only a small event to make a person abandon everything and hit the streets.
This was my first street/ photojournalism portrait and has become one of my most iconic photographs.
His name is Fernando. When I asked him what his story was he just said:
“I’m just waiting for trial, man”.
Why the imperfect crop? Because I refuse to let go of the cigarette your eyes may find if you look closer.
