Testing out the new suction cup camera mount. I set up the self-timer to 10 seconds, hopped in, and took off. Took a few tries to get the wheel so focused, but i’m happy with it.

I like this effect! Alot! Did you use filters to get this look?

  • J. Scott

    J. Scott

Nope, no filters! Just a 15 sec. exposure, and an empty parking lot. Tried it with the camera in quite a few spots before this one. I was dizzy for about 15 min afterwards.

  • Dave Warren

    Dave Warren

well it seems to work ok, excellent outcome, you have to have faith in the suction cups to mount the camera there!! are there any back up safety features on the mount?

  • J. Scott

    J. Scott

I tried the mount using my old digital 8 video camera first. I figured that if I lost it, I would just go and buy a new HD camera. It held very well(i was pretty rough on it too). Im sure you could fasten a strap to the mount/camera, but after the video test, I felt my lighter canon would be fine. Thanks!

excellent work… I am not sure how confident I would be having my camera hanging off the side of a car relying on a suction cup though

  • J. Scott replied

Hey there, I have a favor to ask! Since you won the Slow SHutter Speed challenge on Photogrpahy 101, I was thinking about using this image on the button I am making to create easy access to examples of photography techniques. I just need your permission to snag this work off of RB and use it on the button. Is that ok with you?

PS You will also be asked, when we are ready to do it, to tag this photo with a group tag representing Slow Shutter Speed. This just means you have a good example here and we want to include it in our library of excellent works to exhibit photography techniques.

  • J. Scott replied

Of course! Snag away, haha! Glad I could help. Thanks alot!

The camers you used….is it a dslr or a point and shoot?

  • J. Scott replied

The camera that I used for this one was a Canon Powershot Pro1. It’s not quite a DSLR, but more like a fancy point and shoot with all the little bells and whistles of the SLR. One of the few reasons I moved up to the Canon XSi was for the added creative control and to change lenses(not a fan of the digital zoom). Looks like this!

Awesome shot! I have a similar camera, so I am inspired to try this kind of shot. So you put the timer on and slowed the shutter speed? I am a beginner and would appreciate any advise you have to give. Thanks

  • J. Scott replied

    Thank you, Sherene!
First, I used the flip out screen to find the angle that I liked. Next, set up the suction cup mount with the camera in place. I had the camera set to Shutter Speed Priority mode, with a 15sec exposure. I had the car running already, set the self timer to 10 seconds, carefully got in and drove in circles for the entire exposure. The hardest part was making sure I kept the steering wheel perfectly still so the wheel/tire would stay sharp. Thanks again, and if you wanna know anything else, just ask!

  • Mark Elshout

suction cap camera mount????? I would be so worried about losing the camera! The shots look amazing though.

  • J. Scott replied

Haha, I was! I was going pretty slow just in case, but had used it with a heavier video camera for some burnouts/drifting maneuvers earlier. Figured it would stay on, but still…...Thanks alot for the comment!

Beautiful capture. I was thinking of getting one of them mountings however, I don’t think I’d be comfortable with my canon 400d hanging on the side of the car. But who knows, maybe I’ll use the wife’s Canon ixus! That’ll be ok I’d reckon! ;-))
