Suburban Strike

Taken on a night I was meant to be working, but the storm knocked out the power, so I could guilt free try for a lightning shot.
It also meant that the street lights were out, which was great. I took it freehand out of a window, so was very happy with it, particularly with the horizontal arcs.

No power flowing through the lines, but instead flowing freely through the sky. A powerful image. Thunderstorms are awe inspiring in any situation, but I love the combination of the power lines and the lightning here. Great shot, Damian.

    Good catch, Damian!!

Thanks Hippo, this one was a great storm too! I’m glad you mentioned the power lines, as I thought something similar – dead black lines, but power in the sky :)

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

    Thanks Mel :)
I won’t mention how long it took me to get this one shot though! Lightning lightning everywhere, but usually out of frame!

Great image Damian. I like what you wrote about ‘dead black lines’. Write a poem for this!

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Thanks Chris! I’m not sure about a poem though :)
I’m okay with my stories, but suspect my poetry would be too rubbish to set free :)

This picture is amazing, i’ve never seen a storm like this!

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Thanks Ciara! It was a pretty good storm (took the photo over a year ago – haven’t had another storm since). I think the main strike must’ve been just out of frame, and the bolts I’ve photographed must be attached to it? I haven’t really seen lightning go sideways before :)

That’s brilliant Damian! You are very game going out in that weather;)

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Thanks Shanina! It wasn’t raining at that point, but I was stretched out of a window, rather than out in the open, just in case!

...now that’s a hard picture to get..! ...the brooding atmosphere…and with the powerlines in the shot!....very well done!

I love the purple sky and the silhouette of the trees against it.

  • Damian

    Thanks Elizabeth :)
I thought the original purple was too much, so toned it back in Photoshop as well!

Funny how we’re fascinated by the lightning, like it’s genuine fireworks. Yesterday I was looking at a Dutch weblog. The owner was so pleased that she’d hung out the window to capture the lightning too.

I know, it’s just the best thing to look at, and knowing how tough it is to get a good photo makes me appreciate everyone else’s!

Great shot Damian. Love the contrast with the dead powerlines.

Storms are magical beasts, and they never fail to humble me.

Thanks andromada, I’ve been sort’ve looking forward to another storm for the photos, but I expect it’s not going to be a gentle one, watching all the recent storm destruction!

Another great photo Damian, very moody! I love storms and lightning and would love to take some pics but will have to wait for my SLR to get delivered. I tried before on a compact during a great fork storm, took about 200 pics and got nothing! Damn lag!

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Thanks Roddy. What SLR are you getting?
I’ve had the same experience as you with a compact P&S camera. Great location, brilliant background setting, great colourful clouds, and lots of strikes! Came away with not much at all, but even worse, when I got a good strike, the camera wasn’t really any good for the long exposures, so was just chock full of noise and artifacts.

    Hi Damian,
Due to money constraints, I’ve just ordered a Canon 400d. It’s pretty much bottom of the line but should still be a big improvement over the compact for shots like that. In saying that, I do love my little Ixus and still get blown away with the quality of some of the pics that it produces!

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Enjoy your 400d. Friends of mine have the 300d, and it seemed nice to use. I certainly can’t afford the top of the line gear either, and have been using a Nikon D70, and now have access to a D40x as well. But I like my D70 and still prefer it to the D40x. If I could just wind up the Mpixels a bit more every now and then I’d be real happy!

Amazing capture. It was worth every picture trying to capture this one!!

  • Damian

    Damian, about 1 year ago

Thanks Jeff! The drama I was describing above to Roddy was with an older point-and-shoot camera – my D70 is a much nicer experience (but still took a bit of chasing to get a decent strike).

Thanks Sylvia! I was happy that this one came out the way it did; so many strikes landed just out of frame.

    Great Shot!
although i dont really like powerlines!
because they get in the way of some good shots!
but it works really well in this photo!
    i love it!
an thanks for all your comments!
    much appreciated!

Thanks Amy-lee, I know what you mean about power lines; I’m not a fan either, but then thought they worked in this one too.

Oh yeah, that’s for sure! I had so many shots that almost gave me something, and I was about sick of the attempts. This was my last go, I’d decided if that one didn’t catch something cool, I was stopping. So I stopped happy!
