Hurry

An entry for the Flash Fiction Group’s Back of an Envelope challenge.

We needed to write the story as something urgent that had been written on an envelope, in less than 150 words.

The only reason I write on paper is if I’m going somewhere and need that message left in the real world…

  • Damian replied

Lots of great teasing in this one—it’s happened before? Friendly people end up dead? Was it so sudden that the person the note is to was just away for a few hours, or has it been a longer time? Why is s/he so certain that this person has survived?

Lots of questions make good stories! Well done.

  • Damian replied

    Thanks dirtman :)
All those questions and more, like who has found the envelope right now. A family member, starving survivors, or an archeologist :)

What is implied seems so much scarier than what is said. Sometimes I wonder if my imagination is a curse or a blessing! Great job Damian.

  • Damian replied

Thanks Jo! No, I agree with you, the implications are frightful! :)

I ain’t skeered…I has katana. Let’em come to be chopped into tiny bits of zombieslaw!

  • Damian replied

LOL, there’s my new word for the day…zombieslaw… :)

  • ChainmailChick

    ChainmailChick

There ya go…people should learn a new word every day. Glad to be of assistance, lol.

    Zombieslaw ????

    :shakes head into her hands

  • Damian replied

LOL, I wonder if it’d count in a game of Scrabble?

  • ChainmailChick

    ChainmailChick

I see I’m going to have to write a dictionary of my own. Hrm…sounds fun! =)

  • Damian replied

Haha, the Gaylanary, featuring all of those words you said while swinging a katana :)

  • Alison Pearce

    Alison Pearce

Fabulous Damian! A well written and intriguing snippet that’s left me wanting answers!!!

  • Damian replied

    Thanks Alison :)
Not the sort of note you’d want to find, I think :)

    what is served with zombieslaw?

and why do i suspect the writer did away with those “friendly people”?

  • Damian replied

Served with zombieslaw? Probably a side of shotgun shells or spilt blood, LOL!

And the writer IS one of the friendly people. He wouldn’t have taken all the good gear from the other friendly people. Nope. ;)

  • ChainmailChick

    ChainmailChick

Not all were polite words. Eeep. =)

  • Damian replied

So it’d be an interesting read then? :)

  • ChainmailChick

    ChainmailChick

    Oh, yeah.
    LOL

Fried Cthulhu bits go well with zombieslaw. Sprinkle with a little vamp pepper and top off with a nice werewolf blood’s Chianti, and you’re in business. Oh, and don’t forget the gnome puffs or the fairy pies, either. Gotta have dessert.

  • Damian replied

LOL, fried Cthulhu! I’d like to see anyone try and harvest those squid rings :)

  • Firedrake

    Firedrake

    Hehe…Cthulhu rings!!!!

Cool image. Reminds me of that movie Children of Men…have you seen it? It’s based on a book I’ve been meaning to read.

  • Damian replied

LOL, Cthulhu rings; the most evil take away food you can buy :)

I’ve seen Children of Men, only the movie, so can see what you mean. Could actually be a lingering afterthought of 28 Days Later, which is another Brit movie with a massive disaster.

  • Firedrake

    Firedrake

A Cthulhu ring would encircle your house!!
I’ve seen 28 Days Later…I quite like dystopian/apocalyptic books and films!

  • Damian replied

I’d love to see that Cthulhu ring! Although maybe around someone else’s house, LOL!
We must overlap quite a lot in taste in books and films then :)

  • Judi Taylor

    Judi Taylor

Amazing writing … you told an entire story on the back of an envelope with more passion than most in an entire novel!! You are brilliant!

  • Damian replied

LOL, thanks so much Judi, I’m glad you thought so :)

  • Firedrake

I just read a Handmaid’s Tale – that was great. Read that one?

  • Damian replied

Ooo, doesn’t ring a bell. I’ll go look it up!

  • Tracey Mac

Wow this is compelling…..can’t you write a full series of envelopes? Or turn it into a PC game like Myst? I want more…...please do more….this is just great, excellent work….did you win? I sure hope so!! :)

  • Damian replied

    A series? That’s an interesting idea :)
So’s the PC game idea! LOL, thanks :)
Didn’t win the comp, but I think 3rd? Was something fun and different anyway :)

You DO know I LIVE for zombies right?

  • Damian replied

    Haha, I do now :)
I’m still playing catch up on what happened while I was out NaNo’ing, so I think this is funny that I’m doing a zombie story now, LOL :)
