Half a Year of my Life

Half a Year of my Life

I took up Claire Armistead’s project, the self-portrait-a-day challenge on September 9th 2007, and have faithfully snapped away ever since.

The rules are that each image has to be taken by yourself, and each needs to include at least a part of your face.

A few of the individual pics have made it onto RB in their own right, and others have had turns at being my avatar.

I’m about 75% of the way through, but haven’t finished sorting all of the pics, so this is made up of the first 169 days.

So here’s more of me than you ever thought (or reasonably expected!) to see, LOL! Through the ups and downs, fun and silliness, grumpy days and sleep deprevation. Mostly the last one though…!

Half a Year of my Life belongs to the following groups:

Hehe, cool! Some interesting perspectives there!

  • Damian replied

LOL, thanks Lee! Yes, I’d agree! This challenge starts off as brilliant fun, then slowly wears away at you…! And then it gets interesting, with what you start trying, just to amuse and distract yourself. And the camera is always out so I don’t forget to take a pic!! And is funny tracking my work stress levels through the images! :)

This is fantastic Damian.. glad to see that you have kept up with the challenge! I too started Claire challenge on 1st January this year… still going strong and lots of fun to look back at!

  • Damian replied

Thanks Paul! Yep, kept it up, and another 3 months to go!!! I’ve been wondering about how to present them, and needed to pull together some images for next week, so thought I’d start this and use it as well.
I’ve decided I need more bright sunny pics, cos this lot is pretty dark, LOL!
I’ll look forward to seeing your year as well!

    brutusB3

How did you take that one where you’re lying on the grass??

  • Damian replied

    LOL brutusB3 :)
There’s a few pics taken using the self timer on the camera. Set the camera up on a tripod, compose the shot, focus, set the timer and jump into it! All still me, so still a self portrait :)

Wow, good on you for sticking with it!
btw, what’s up with that photo on the top row, 4th from the right? Very spooky!

  • Damian replied

    Thanks Kaitlin :)
And that pic was a half-arsed play with a double exposure, LOL! Trying to overlay my face with my husky, LOL! Much easier to do as post rather than on camera!

  • Miri

    Miri

    how awesome is that?!
prompts loads of thoughts, not that i’m a particularly deep thinker LOL!
    – so is the person in the last photo the same as the one in the first?!
    – what was the journey from one to the other like?

  • Damian replied

    Hey Bex, thanks :)
I liked your comment, and must admit, I stalled on answering you. Made me stop and go ‘hmmm’. Good questions.
I think the person in the last pic there is certainly different. This series was begun during some massive work turmoil for me, so some of the darkess I was feeling seeped out (and into my writing. If someone has been killed in a story, they probably have a work face, haha!). But that was the beginning, and I’m now glad of it, as it pushed me out of my comfort zone and off my arse, LOL! At the start of this I’d never had any paid photography work and never had any writing published.
As for the journey, it was full of coffee and lack of sleep, LOL! But I can see light (it’s probably just dawn again though…!)

Ohhhh Damian, you’ve done such a good job!!! Never as easy as it looks is it?! This is such a brilliant compilation and glad to see how far you’ve come. Can’t wait to see the finished version x

  • Damian replied

Thanks Claire! I’m glad you stopped by for a look :)
I’ve got to have another effort and pull them together right up to date! I’ve learnt that I need to get a new computer if I want to consider building the complete set with full or half sized images, LOL! I crashed out at half size a couple of times just making this one :)

  • Jesss

    Jesss
