Has anyone seen the works of Jann Arthus-Bertrand...

Hi everyone…

I just paid a visit (another one) to the pages of Ronald Rockman on RB (you must all go and have a look!!!)

His aerial photography reminds me of the works by the world renowned photographer Jann Arthus-Bertrand His book titled “The Earth From The Air” is an absolute “must see” compilation of unbelievable photos and incredible commentary.

See if your local Library has a copy… you WILL NOT be disappointed! I have my own copy which was not cheap… but frequently revisit the book and am in awe every time.

It is book that is bigger than many atlases and has around 150 double page spreads that are awesome and many single page photos… over 190 in all.

The ISBN no of the book is 0-500-01955-X. Do not pass up the opportunity to see this book.

His website is also worth visiting… it is at http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/index_new.htm

I encourage you all to pay a visit and I would absolutely love to hear any comments and feedback from anyone who visits the site or sees the book… Please make any comments as an “add on” to this entry to the RB site. I look forward to them all!!!

Regards,

Craig Watson

PS… I know there are a number of fellow RB participants in Adelaide and its environs. Perhaps we can organise a gathering at some time to have a chat, compare notes etc. I am 240 kms away, but travel to Adelaide every month or so… I look forward to the opportunity!!!... How about a photo taking journey around the streets and/or parks of Adelaide and a gathering at some cafe or pub afterwards???

...and I can bring “The Earth From The Air” with me if you wish!!!

Haven’t seen the book, but I did visit an open-air exhibition in the Netherlands a few years ago of Jann Arthus-Bertrand. And you’re right, truly staggering shots!

I have been in communication with the J A-B people to try and get a visit of the works to Australia, and in particular, to Adelaide… they say they need a strong suport team to get behind it…

...perhaps RB may be interested in exploring the idea of supporting an Austrlia wide tour of Jann work…

    What do you all think???

Whether the works do a tour or not… lets encourage all RBers to take a look at his website… I am certain they wont regret it.

I’ve seen the open air exhibitions of Jann Arhthus-Bertrand’s amazing works in three places – Seoul, Singapore and Prague. And I’m amazed everytime I see his work. Truly inspirational.

I hope you win an exhibition for Adelaide Craig, we have had two Yann exhibitions in Melbourne over the last year or so – the open air exhibition, and before that his Horses which is quite stunning photography, massive in size and scope. To see the horses visit Yann’s website – http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/ – better still find about his new project “Six Million Others” to see the magic still to come.

Yeah the show in Melbourne was beautiful, beautiful 50 inch high lambda prints from the 35mm slides… I also have the book, but it’s just not quite the same as prints 2m wide !

... and while the CD from JAB’s beautiful book is in on the CD rack, I can’t find the book itself, a behemoth that cost over $80 … and I really don’t want to have to spend that money again, but it’d be worth it.

The photography is spectacular, and also haunting. The view of the heart-shaped lagoon within the forest that disappears a few years later is a wake-up call. But the sheer vibrancy of the images are totally compelling.

Years ago, I was lucky enough to work as a pilot for an airline in Papua New Guinea, and because of the clouds in the afternoons, we were forced to fly low level … over mountains, across valleys, rivers, ravines, huge, sheer walls of rock reaching thousands of feet up and into the clouds. Jungle and verdant vegetation covered everything that didn’t move, and the scenery has burnt into my mind.

The photos of JAB bring back these memories so sweetly, even though the scenes were different, of course. Soon, it’ll be a year since I “misplaced” the JAB book, and I’ll just have to concede it went walkabout and I’ll have to buy another copy. It’s worth it. (And if the book reappears after I purchase a replacement, well, it’ll make a stunning gift!)

Oh, let the joy be unconfined! I FINALLY found this book, after making the most determined of efforts … it was on one of my bookshelves all along.

However, it wasn’t the book you listed here, this one’s one of his other books, entitled “Being A Photographer”. Still, it has heaps of his aerial shots. Now, I think I might be justified in getting that book you suggest!

And I smile as I think of James Pierce’s comment, about the book not being quite the same as the 50” high lambda prints … which aren’t quite the same as looking down on the planet from above, but … even the images here are enough to tickle the senses in the sweetest of ways, to let your imagination run wild, but with a bit of coaxing by these images!
