Lightning looking east from the southern Yorke Pensinsula
Testing out the capacity of my new Kodak Z650… taken with 8 second exposure at 400 ISO and at wide angle… a portion has been cropped out as a separate close-up image. I set up on a tripod and took over 130 images during the spectacular lighting display.
Lightning looking east from the southern Yorke Pensinsula belongs to the following groups:

Best capture of a storm I have seen in a long time
Michael Bermi...
Excellent Craig,
The higher ISO has attributed to the grain though. I always shoot lightning on ISO-100.
No grain in up to 5 minute exposures.
GrifGrif
Holy crap! Thats way too cool for words! Is that altered or natural?
Craig Watson
Thanks GrifGrif…
It is absolutely natural… It was taken on the evening of 2 March 2007 at 10:55 pm.
As I stated in the accompanying comments, I took aver 130 shots with the camera set on a tripod… The storm was spectacular and unfortunately it is a bit of pot luck and persistance that yields a shot like this when the camera is limited to an 8 second exposure. I just stood there and took shot after shot and then checked them out afterwards… all in all, I was out there for a little over an hour and only ended up with a few “bubbleworthy” shots and this I think was the best.
Thanks again for your comment and to everyone else who has done the same.
Regards,
Craig

Thanks for your comment Michael Bermingham.
I absolutely understand the graininess, but I only have a midrange camera and with an 8 second maximum exposure. Therefore I need to compromise somewhere and I did this by going to 800 ASA. One of these days, I will (hopefully) have sufficient spare dollars to by a good digital SLR with all the nice bells and whistles!!!
Thanks again, Craig

That is absolutely fantastic.

This is by far one of the best I’ve ever seen Craig!!!
Craig Watson replied
I take that with a pinch of salt!!!
There are some other amazing photos on the “bubble” that are much more impressive than this… type “lightning” in the search area and see what you find.
Thanks all the same!

awesome lightning capture
Paul Alderson
Good one Craig, inspired me to check out future lightning events.
Nancy Graves
Thank you for sharing the details on the shoot. Excellent work. Did you use a remote?
Craig Watson replied
No… I don’t have that luxury, but fortunately have a short delay option in setting up to take a shot… Just as good I quess.
...and thanks for the visit and comment… It is appreciated!
Nancy Graves replied
I’m afriad I don’t have one myself, but kudos to you. What kind of camera do you have? I have a Rebel XT purchased last summer.
Craig Watson replied
I have a Kodak Z650… a midrange sort of thing but unfortunately is not a digital SLR. One plus is that it has 10x Optical Zoom and a further 5x digital zoom and does some reasonable macro work.
One day (when I have made lots of bubble-sales… LOL) I may be able to afford a realy good dSLR with all the bells and whistles!!! (-:
Paul Thompson
I like this a lot !!! Well done.
Nancy Graves
I certainly do wish you well on your bubble sales. It took 1.5 paychecks to get it but I did before I moved to the Grand Canyon. I’m still rather new and find myself a bit intimidated by the great ones here however it’s a great ‘think tank’. Keep shooting. Nancy

Hi everyone… here is an example of this in a frame… hope you like it!

Awsome capture Craig, simply stunning. The stars are an added bonus to this.

Browsing your work Craig. This is my very favourite. I’ve always wanted to catch lightning. My camera’s not good enough (little Sony digital), so I’ll just admire your beautiful work. Thanks for sharing it.
Craig Watson replied
Thanks emmmee…

I love the menacing approach. One of my writing pieces describes an event just like this.
Craig Watson replied
Fortunately I guess, this was all moving away from me rather than coming towards me! This particular storm went over half an hour to an hour earlier, and I went out with the camera to do what I could. I took many shots and this was the best of them… all a bit of persistance and pot luck really!
There were something like 60,000 bolts of lightnig reported in the news the next day.
Steve Chapple
Persistence pays off! Well captured..
Craig Watson replied
Thanks Stephen… just looking forward to the next opportunity to do it again! Would love to have a much longer exposure time… one day!!!
