Renner, S.D. (USA) – Renner Lutheran Church was originally named Old Nidaros. Renner Lutheran Church is one of four area churches that are home to the original Nidaros Congregation, chartered in 1868. Click HERE for more history featuring all four churches in the congregation.

The sign in front of the church reads: “Old Nidaros – The Traveling Church. Rebuilt 1878 from timbers of wind-wrecked church three miles south from Baltic. Moved to Baltic 1912. Moved to Renner 1939. Oldest church in use in South Dakota.”

Please visit my Churches and Cemeteries collection to find more photos of historic and country churches in southeast South Dakota. You can also click on the “sd-nidaros” tag to see photos of the other churches in the Nidaros congregation.

Super church, Greg. Lovely setting too. Love reading a little bit of history.

  • You’re always so sweet with your comments, Sheryl. I’m so glad you enjoyed the photo! I absolutely love seeking out and photographing these old country churches.

Barns and churches are my favorite things. Although, since the move out west, I have had to find other things to photograph. lol

  • You’ve got such incredibly beautiful scenery!! I’d take that stunning scenery over old barns any day!

You would miss the old barns, believe me. I miss them and I miss the changing colors of fall. But I guess that is the price I have to pay for my happiness.

  • You’re right. I would miss them. South Dakota is my home and I have discovered much beauty here. I’m so glad you’ve found your happiness, my friend.
