Lucky You!

LUCKY YOU!

Wow, what a lucky shot.

How many times have you heard this said when showing a fantastic picture? Did you really feel lucky, or were you actually feeling slightly insulted by the remark? Or, maybe you were very insulted?

Of course, you didn’t know where your subject was going to be, or how you wanted to set up for the shot, now did you? Why, you probably had no idea when the sun was going to rise, or how the shadows would fall. Of course not! But that split second of opportunity came your way and waited until you were ready! Lucky you!

And for God’s sake – why in the world would you buy a brand new camera and take it with you without even looking at the manual? Bet you don’t even know what size batteries that your camera uses, right? At least you remembered to learn how to take the lens cap off before you tried to get that elusive shot. But that’s ok, you knew that split second of opportunity would wait until you were ready! Lucky you!

Now tell the truth, you think that an f-stop is the cursing that you do at a traffic light, because you might be late for your shoot. But there is no need to worry, that split second of opportunity will not come until all the conditions are just right for your exposure settings. Sure, no worry at all. Lucky you!

Hey, you can let us in on your secret. After all, you’ll still keep getting those fabulous shots. That split second of opportunity is always glad to be more than accommodating to help you get those pictures. Lucky you!

Well, I’ll keep your technical abilities a secret. You can count on me.

Oh, and by the way, a tripod isn’t three iPods taped together for more mp3 capacity, but I bet you already knew that. Lucky you!

Lucky You! by

Over the past couple of months I have learned so much, I started to give some thought to being “lucky” to get some good photos. Sure, there is always an element of luck, but how much of the luck is the result of being prepared when that moment arrives? Hmmm, I wonder.

Bought a smile to my face, well written and so true. I would say that some days I am lucky with the the conditions and some days I am not, but you are right about preparing and the other thing you didn’t mention is the days on end some photographers spend revisiting a site waiting for all the conditions to be just right.

Some luck comes into some shots, but time and skill and patience are also major factors. Anyone can get lucky and take a great photo, but it takes real skill to take great photos consistenetly.

Well said!!!! I am NEVER going to say “I was lucky with this shot” again. Because it was not luck, it was what I planned on taking and I hope that the camera would capture what I saw in my mind. Having a passion for taking pictures is not luck, it is a blessing!! Thank you for this!!!

  • Good for you! You are quite welcome – keep on “making your luck” happen!

This is making me laugh because I didn’t get the lucky shot comment, I had a mom come to a birthday party and she was looking at family snapshots and I have my art hanging on the walls and she said about the snaps, “Wow, you really are a photographer…..” She didn’t mean in the sense of wow amazing art she meant, your snaps look so much better than mine, My husband laughed!

LOL!!!! Oh I stepped in it BIG time didn’t I??? LOL!! Well … I fully appreciate your point .. the intention, the set up and (at least a little) knowledge go a long way to creating a good shot, I do agree … but at least at this point in what I’m doing, luck does play a part!!! What a joy to know that in time … with practice … the “luck” will be playing a smaller and smaller role!!!! Loved your thoughts!!!!! Thanks for pointing me here, hon!!! hugzz!!!
