Motionhouse dance company performing ‘Cascade’ as part of the three-days Greater Manchester festival Urban Moves 2010

Urban Moves International Biennale Dance Festival 2010, Manchester

The Urban Moves festival takes place around the city of Manchester over 3 days – Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th July – and features spectacular aerial dance pieces, 4 new commissions and international companies from Greece, France, Spain and Italy.

Performance: Set on a submerging house as the flood waters rise, Cascade is a thrilling and enthralling look at one family’s scramble to keep their heads above water and their feet on dry land! A company of fabulous dancers balance, fall, slide and tumble their way upwards as they ascend through the levels of their domestic life and arrive adrift on an endlessly disappearing island.

It all started when I was about 8 when my brother received a camera as a present. It fascinated me, and a year later, I won a basic camera for holiday work at school. The virus was inoculated.
I had my first SLR 18 years ago, went staight for the darkroom at Uni but decided that staying up all nights was not a good idea so I restricted myself to only taking photos after a while. I quickly jumped on the digital bandwagon and loved it straight away..

There’s always a first time for everything…first time I’ve seen a shot of a dancer hanging or balancing on a pole.

  • These guys were amazing. I suppose I should make them justice with a little montage restauring their story :)

    Great Shot :)
Personally, I think landscape (wide not portrait) would have been better.

  • Thanks!
I suppose the portrait conveys better the idea of height, and at the time, I was really amazed at what the guy could do up there, so that’s why it came up as portrait. The scene was rather dynamic too…

    – Cvail73

  • Ah, also, this scene was surrounded by a structure, so the shot would have been visually polluted I’m afraid….
