The Anonymous Dead

I’ve never lost a comrade
and I’ve never been to war
But I know the things you fight for
I recognize the core
I don’t believe in God
to me he’s a wrong idea
and yet every night I pray
for the stars to shine more clearly
I know they cannot guide you
or show you where to go
but they can make the night seem brighter
and shed a piece of hope.

All the things you protect
make you honourable men
You will go to heaven
for fighting battles of hell
people call you soldiers
and salute you as you go
grateful that you’re strong enough
to turn and face the foe

This is how I thank you
a poem in an anonymous head
I believe it’s as good as any
dedicated to all who fought and bled
soldiers of time
