Abbotsford Icehouse

Abbotsford Icehouse

This image was taken at Abbotsford House in Scotland…...
A few years ago I had the opportunity and pleasure of having afternoon tea with the late Lady Jean Maxwell-Scott, who was the G.G.G.G.G.Grandaughter of Sir Walter Scott.
It is a moment in my life that I will treasure forever.
But when walking through her property and gardens with her, she explanied to me that this structure was the old Icehouse.
When it snowed, the snow and ice was swept through a hole in the roof and collected inside to operate as a freezer for the meats and other perishables.
Long live the memory of this wonderous woman. I miss her dearly.

Brilliant story Larry, and what an honour to have tea with the Late Jean Maxwell …... I feel sure if you had shown her some of your work she would have enjoyed it. Great shot by the way!! – David :>))

  • Larry Davis replied

Thanks mate, as I have no doubt that Lady Jean enjoyed her time with us, as we did with her.
She was a total joy to be with.
At the time she had her neice and husband staying with her, and all they wanted to talk about was Australian cricket.
But when Lady Jean found out that I was a gardener, she just wanted to learn about Australian plants and how they compared with the Scottish ones..
She so loved her garden, and her chooks.

    Gorgeous Laz
Is this a National Trust Property? There is a new group for these properties [hope that works lol]
Love the treatise that goes with it [Brilliant ingenuity re the ice]
and your shot does show a gorgeous side of it! [oh to sit and write in that window … I wonder if Walter did … that makes me think of him growing up there running about playing ball ….]
    BRAVO bro! xXx

  • Larry Davis replied

Inside the actual house was to die for….
    So much history.
    It just blew me away.
And to see the private side which the tourist didn’t see, was just overpowering.

    National Trust Properties
    Chookas! xXx

  • Larry Davis replied

Abbotsford House is now a Museum and IS NOT a National Trust Property.
Up until Lady Jean Maxwell-Scott’s death a couple of years ago, it was her private residence.

NOW I am jealous!!!! .... (lol)
How did you get to meet her?
I would love to go see through all these Homes – have to get to go through the ones here lol
& what a pity the Bushfires obliterated the celebrations of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch’s 100th Birthday! – Cruden Farm is only up the road from me but it’s not that old only 80 years [-ish lol] she loves my Tom! lol [he was her fave school captain of late – my kids attend the school she put her name to – Elisabeth Murdoch College (EMC) – the old Langwarrin High
    Back to the IceHouse,
Were you allowed to take shots inside?

  • Larry Davis replied

Prior to going over at that time, I did my homework before I left Australia, and visited places like Abbotsford House and Hampton Court Palace and the Glasgow City Council and lots of other places as an official guest.
I was representing the Moreland City Council who I work for, and was doing a working holiday, to be able to study the gardens of these places.
So I organised a letter of introduction from my CEO as well as gifts presented by the council and just made myself known to them personally before I left.
Everywhere I went, I was welcomed with open arms.
If you ever get to the City of Poole Council Offices in the UK, there is a Eucalyptus alpina that was planted in my honour by the Mayor and the CEO of that city on there main front lawn.
And yes, I did take images throughour the house with Lady Jean.
