Red (Sacral Red)

This poem is an attempt to clarify red, red ochre, “red-band” Law, red blood, sacred woman’s business, and our connection to the “red” earth of the land, from an Aboriginal perspective of course.
Please note I said an “attempt” ...

Mine blood is the colour of red — warm, sticky, fluid —
moving thickly, smoothly through the channels of my flesh.
The fluid of my life. And red is the colour of mine earth,
outback in the centre of my Australian home —
red, dusty powerful earth —
a throne for dark-skinned beings for millennia now unknown.

And red is the colour of a sun-burnt sky, at dusk when the birds
squawk to the kingdoms on high. Ah yes, red.

The sacred colour of initiates, and birth and death and life.
And red, is the colour for stop, rest a while. The colour of
significance, when worn as a sacred red-band upon the
head of law woman and man, outback in the country of red sand.

And yes, the flames of fire jump, sway and dance,
from the power of the sun stored then energised in their demise,
burning embers friend and foe, beneath stars that glow from sunlight,
distant specks in darkness void.

Yep, red, the colour of sunburnt skin of paler ones,
who came to these shores, fracturing ancient law,
in their search for new lands, now Home.

Rednecks aglow, filled with pride, red faces flush anger or embarrassment,
fry in the hot sun because of ignorance, cancer spread.

Red, powerful, sacred omniscience — sacred carrier of the elements —
energised, vitalised, conduit of life. My sacred earth, outback,
campfires warming welcoming smiles,
enlightening dark-skinned containers of a law and world so old;
The redness fierce of sun-god tales,
of peoples who seek further understanding of life;
who melt and meld in the heat and passion of lust and love,
blood pulsating, thumping pulse,
while bodies sweat in the redness of sacred motion.

Red roses of destiny, a message of affection perhaps,
flowers to you from I. Red coloured the fruit of Adam and Eve,
fills the very essence of our being.

Red the colour of rust,
eroded metal from weathered exposure,
too long in the seasoning of summer and winter —
alchemy — a bit like you and me.

Red is the colour of the inner vulva, pinkly flesh,
and menstrual fluids precious, from the womb bled —
sacred gateway portal connecting one world to another,
give thanks to the Mother. Sacred red, common colour, powerful.

Oops … now what was it I saw?
Ah yes, now I recall — I see Red.

hey – had to wait around and read this. Red yes red – and how you expand it touching the essence and the echo. i specially like this: ‘the flames of fire jump, sway and dance,
from the power of the sun stored then energised in their demise,
burning embers friend and foe, beneath stars that glow from sunlight,’ goodnight xjm
