Know Any Teens That Thrill Seek by Crowmanic

Posted on October 27, 2011

The following story was on the news today (27 Oct 2011) in Australia …

“Teen dies after playing deadly game”
A 15-year-old Gold Coast girl has been found dead in her bedroom after playing a “choking game”. The girl, Abigail Corthals, was found with a belt around her neck after playing the deadly game popular among teens in the US.

Dozens have been killed by playing the dangerous game, which involves young people trying to asphyxiate themselves or each other to achieve a temporary high.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare and we don’t want it to happen to anyone else,” Abigail’s father Michael Corthals told News Limited newspapers. “I would not wish this even on my worst enemy.” Now Abigail’s parents are warning other parents of the dangers of the *internet-inspired activity.+

The parents found Abigail on October 3 slumped against her bed with a belt around her neck. At first, Mr and Mrs Corthals thought their daughter had committed suicide but after a police investigation of Abigail’s internet activity they discovered she had been playing the dangerous game. “If we had heard of it, we would have spoken to Abigail about it and told her ‘we hope you’re not doing anything that stupid’,” Mrs Corthals said.
Abigail’s parents found a message on her MSN account [internet Messaging] which suggested she intended to quit the game, telling a friend: “We have to stop this now”.
Mr and Mrs Corthals did not know the game existed or that Abigail was playing it, until her daughter’s fatal mistake. “She obviously did it for one last thrill,” Mr Corthals said. “Kids think they are invincible and she didn’t realise that the thrill could kill her. It’s a silent killer too. There was no warning. Abigail even left her bedroom door open while she was doing it.”

I was so shocked, I thought I’d do a bit of research… see this video…

… there are many others on this so-called “choking game”!

It never ceases to amaze and sadden me to know what is being done by hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, in the name of “thrills”, “kicks”, and/or “fun” … to themselves or others… cruelty, torture, exploitation (eg sexting on SMS/mobile phones) and such-like … Is the “toxic generation” a by-product of boredom and the “affluent society”?
