In the 21st Century modernised, Western world I live in, I have had to struggle hard to maintain, protect and defend my Aboriginality, of this be no doubt … I, according to professional labels, am a Counsellor, educated, trained & experienced, and paid (livelihood) to provide assistance and guidance to those who have struggles and conflicts, blocks and confusions in their lives and relationships. However, if I were to be asked by my peers in this “profession” what modalities, methods, “schools” of theoretical practice I use, my answer/s would readily discount me as an equal, according to their standards and definitions.
And yet, on my business card, and in accordance with those whom employ me — my time/skills — and for those who contact me for “help” — it clearly says I am a Counsellor … and in my mind, it goes like this … counsellor, cancel-or-else, cancerous. Perhaps I am a “cancel-lore”? Attempting to “cancel-out” the issues and causes of people’s “stuckness”, depression, aggression, disturbances, frustrations, dis-ease, dis-stress … I attempt to dispel as in de-spell the afflictions and ill-at-easiness that folks suffer. My methods and approach may not be “text-book” perfect nor acceptable to the “profession” as it is … however, for now, I get away with such judgement and assessment from such “standard-makers” in the mainstream, because, my clients and others are the living results of their time/experience and conversations/conversions they have taken part in. They are the walking, talking evidence that substantiates what transpires (tran-spirits) through our engagement, our sessions. That is the only validation I require … results and personal/genuine testimonials … and my “indigene”, my aboriginality, my ancestral, genetic and spiritual connection thrives within, and against all assaults and attempts to dismantle, discredit, and ignorance of the new-world learned.
(I suggest reading my article Aboriginal Is Not Religion for further understanding of my pov)
Every now & then I get to hear of, or read about another who "leans’ towards the indigenous or “aboriginal” way/s of healing, of therapy and therapising …
“Slowly I came to understand the similarity with my psychiatric language — symptomatic behaviors are caused by trauma to the psyche, the incorporation of negative introjects, unconscious forces that get inside us and take us over. They are all another name for evil spirits, demons, and witchcraft.
Things get inside of us that can eat us apart; those that get inside early in our lives are harder to get out later on. The more ways you can find to assist people get rid of what’s killing them from within, the better you can heal them. It was only when I studied with Milton Erickson (a genius psychiatrist who I never heard about in my psychiatric training) that I understood how many ways there were to open channels into the unconscious mind.
I now incorporate traditional healing methods in my clinical practice; having discovered that healing is essentially a spiritual expedition, not a physical one. There is a difference between healing and curing. Healing takes place at the soul level and the process has less to do with getting better than it does with getting real. Healing is about learning to better play the hand you’ve been dealt rather than asking for a new deal. …" ~ Dr. Carl Hammerschlag from “Kindling Spirit: Healing from Within”
I am not going to waffle-on or attempt to explain further, I really just want to share this excerpt and the complete article with you folks out there who continue to leave with doubt, the sceptics and the racially or culturally bias who have resistance to anything that cannot be “scientifically” or logically explained and defined within a modern or “Western” framework.
Take care, as all-ways … more so if you know how …

They didn’t include Milton Erickson in your studies – wow, what a huge oversight.
Love this… ‘Healing is about learning to better play the hand you’ve been dealt rather than asking for a new deal.’ I couldn’t agree more.
Sherri Nic...

Very interesting reading, I too will go back later to read the links….
I think it’s kinda strange, that ‘modern medicine’ seems to just recently be getting the notion that mind, body and soul must all be addressed together to do anything towards healing what ails
Crowmanic:
ah bicyclegirl … thank you for interest shown …

This read sparks a real interest in me. Learning how to work with the hand delt to us is an ever growing process. I have learned that acceptance isn’t a surrender to status quo, but an active engagement of its reality and learning how to work within its boundaries to make a better life for us all. For many years I have battled against the lable placed on me and suffered greatly because of it. Once I’ve accepted it I learned not only how to work within its boundaries but excel in them as well. Being able to teach people how to work with their realities places you in the top of your field as a healer of mankind.
Great write! I really love it and will read further for a better understanding of where you are coming from.

I would so love to talk with you in this area of your expertise/training. I don’t think I will ever understand my journey, but I got lucky now and then and landed on contentment. Nothing changed really but I discovered an undercurrent of loving spirit that led me to exclaim I was grace-kept. Can’t explain it but I know it is true.
