Please Don't Hurt Me by

Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive.

Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable.

Very poignant image. Its inconceivable that people would do such evil, and I think it’s really important that we are reminded of such atrocities since it is all to easy to forget when we are sat in our comfy chairs thinking we haven’t got a care in the world. I will be going on the websites that you have listed, although I may find the images too harrowing. Thanks for making me aware once again.

  • Very well said! It’s too true. Those of us that aren’t faced with these events on a regular basis get way too comfortable in our own day to day lives. It’s easy to forget what goes on outside our own comfort zone ~ and even worse, it’s easy to ignore.

I hope to change all that. I know it’s a huge task I’m taking on, but I have to try.

Yeah, I agree. It is a huge task, but you obviously feel strongly about it, and its inspiring that you are reaching out to as many people as possible. It’s a sad fact that those that have the most power (in this overly materialistic world) seem to wait until it’s too late before even thinking about taking action. The voice of the ‘little’ man is often shoved into the background and the innocent (the seals and all our animals) are seen as nothing more than pound signs or in some cases a nuisance, which must be got rid of by any means necessary. I believe strongly in what you are doing and wish you luck. You are not alone.

  • Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words ~ it really does mean a lot to me. :)
