Do we not bleed?

Do we not bleed?

If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? -Shakespeare

Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive.

Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable.

Powerful piece, Lorie. What happens to the seals is unconscionable… Major kudos to you for raising awareness with your beautiful artwork.

  • Crockpot replied

Thanks so much, Erin! It’s gotten under my skin to the point where I’m having trouble thinking about much else. I’m very proud of what our little group is pulling together though – we’ve got 42 images so far, thanks to a great bunch of people. :)

42… the magic number. :P (I’m showing my Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy geekiness here, sorry, lol).

I can’t wait to see the finished piece. I wish I had some seal photos to contribute. :(

May the souls of the all innocent creatures killed by these horrific deeds enlighten many more compassionate individuals to finally overpower the greedy, cruel and sickening objectives and market that fuel this horrendous activity.

    Excellent and courageous initiative, Lorie.

I agree that it is a shame that this sort of thing still exisits. I did not realise the cruelty involved which has saddened me…..I support WSPA but I do not remember reading anything about this…..

  • Crockpot replied

Yes, the cruelty is beyond belief. I think the WSPA has been more involved in the past; it seems this year most of the focus has been on the HSUS and Sea Shepherd because of their direct involvement. You can go to either website and read daily blogs, press releases and view some of the most horrid photos and videos…

Just looked on one of the web sites, I had to turn it off. It is so heartbreaking and left me very sickened and so sad. A very apt title to a powerful image.

  • Crockpot replied

Yes – the whole thing is devastating. I only wish I could do more.
