Bitter Night

No excuses

will soothe
the pain
that I caused you,
and time may not
heal those wounds
so quickly
as for us to forget
that night
not so long ago.
No words can take back
tears shed on wooden floors.
No saying, “I’m sorry”
can heal those bruises
left the morning after,
a bitter reminder
of a fight
that never should have been.
There is nothing left
but to look at me,
and I will look at you.
But will we see
the person
that once stood in our place
before we raised our hands?
Will we see regret in our
whispers of apologies
slipping from our lips?
I can say, “I’m sorry”
a thousand times,
and my eyes can beg
for forgiveness
every time you look
back at me.
But what is done is done.
There is no taking back
that night
with memories of it
still lingering
in shadows of this house.
There is no going back,
and I can not take
those scars away.
All I can say
is that
I’m sorry,
and in time,
I hope
for you
to forgive
