Artist's Description

Final (so far) photo in the series of photographs of statues depicting Native Americans. This picture is the least retouched, seen pretty much straight from the camera with only some cropping and sharpened contrast. Since only part of a tree shows in the background, with no buildings or telephone wires, I thought this picture best showed how this person would have looked in his own environment, his own time, enjoying a beautiful, sunny, blue sky day.

UPDATE Oct. 2009. After another visit to the park where these statues are found, I have new information to share about some of them. This particular individual, whom I labeled “Medicine Man,” is actually identified as Abdih-Hiddisch, Hidatsa Chief; the 7 foot tall bronze statue, apparently one of an edition of nine, was sculped by John Coleman from a painting of the chief, a copy of which I found on Wikipedia and show below.

My own label of this figure was not that far off. Although I did not identify him as a chief, this figure is on display and also available for sale at the Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery
