Artist's Description

One of the most popular of Hindu deities, Ganesha is known as the lord of beginnings, remover of obstacles, and patron of arts and sciences, and is honored with affection at the start of any important event, such as a wedding, the building of a house, or writing a book.

When my cousin’s daughter married, the couple had a Catholic ceremony in the morning, for the bride and her family, and an Indian ceremony in the afternoon, for the groom and his family. A large, golden Ganesh figurine festooned with garlands of red and white flowers was a prominent feature at the ceremony.

This picture was worked up from a photo of my own three-inch tall figure of Ganesh, which is made of some kind of molded resin compound to look like old carved ivory. My camera isn’t very good for macro photography so, in order to take care of the soft focus, I had to provide the image with some artistic treatment.
