Aladdin's lamp in Mazikoy underground city by

There are more than 100 underground cities in Cappadocia (Central Anatolia,Turkey), 37 of them are open. In some cases they are really huge, in some of them, unce upon a time, more than 10.000 could live inside for periods of several months.

The most “touristic” ones, are those of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, well organized, with good lighting, and quite easy to cross. Even Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, are not suggested to those who suffer from claustrofobia, there are some really narrow tunnes to pass, if you want to go down 5 “floors”.But if you really want to live an unforgetable adventure, feel a little bit like Indiana Jones, then you have to go to Mazikoy (in the photo). It’s probably the largest underground city by far, going down 10 floors and covering a large area. It’s not organized for tourists, so you will avoid the crowds for sure, there’s a good chance that you ’ll enjoy the tour, by yourself and the guide. That guide, is a not just a guide, the tour is more like a happening, Mr. Ihsan Cavdar (ihsan cavdar_29@hotmail.com) , is more than a guide, he is also an “actor” and a “director”, he will really make feel how living underground was really like. It was the best tour I had in my life. But, Mazikoy is not for the faint hearted! You ’ll have to climb up & down, through vertical tunnels, up to 15m tall, sometimes tight with a rope. But, believe me, after that, you ’ll feel like a different man!

  • Thank you very much, Vicki! You should definitely visit Cappadocia one day! About the descriptions, apart from being a travel photographer, I am a travel editor, too, so I ’m used to giving some more extra info with my photos!
