This alligator was captured at Fisheating Creek in Palmdale Fl.
Alligators are armed with 80 potentially lethal teeth, shaped like cones, making them perfect for both grabbing and holding onto prey. Below each tooth is a replacement tooth that will appear when the primary tooth gets damaged or worn. However, the teeth aren’t suitable for chewing; alligators swallow their prey either in large chunks or whole, depending on the size of the prey. The alligator diet consists mostly of fish, turtles and snakes, although they have been known to strike an occasional small deer, wading bird, raccoon or even small pets.
great shot karen…all the ones i see, i can’t seem to catch them with their mouth open.
Howard thanks for the wonderful comment and just so you know I often go to this pace called fisheating creek and many other places like it. I bet in the last year I have seen over 1000, and since I have been taking photos of gator I bet I have seen over 5000 gators easy and this is only the third time I have seen one with his mouth opened. Its all luck !!!
I have many Alligator shots my friend, yet none of them have their mouth open. You had perfect timing on this one!
Franklin I have to say it was pure luck, You wouldn’t believe what actually happened. It was at the end of our day we (my husband and I) were heading back to the campgropund at the creek I shot my last photo my card was full. My husband said to me I think you got some great gator shots. I said well I am sure some are good but a great one would be one with his mouth opened or doing something instead of just laying on the bank. I swear no sooner did I say that when we flew by this on in our boat. I actually had to delete some photos and go back hopeing he would still be there and no scare him into the water. Well as you can see it all worked out. I would have to say it was really pure luck!!!!!
oooooooh myyyyyyyyyyy heavens, Karen!!!!!!!!!!!! This is … kinda scary!!!! But OH SO COOL!!!!!! Just read your note to Franklin and had to laugh .. good for you, girl … for going back and deleting those other shots!!! it was worth it!!! WOW!!!
Thanks Lois I am pleased with this photo, and amazed that the gator was willing to pose most hit the water so fast! I don’t know what shots I lost that day not really but I do believe that it was worth it!! Thanks Lois for your wonderful comment!!!
