A Crested Cara Cara is a member of the Falcon family. Cara Cara’s will feed on small snakes, lizards and other small prey but their main diet is carrion. Often found like you see in this photo on the fence line over looking the highway for any fallen prey. These birds live in a concentrated area of the United State in Central Florida and virtually unknown outside the interior of south and central Florida. I have tried for many years now to capture one of these cool looking birds, although seen many times, often out of reach of my 300mm lens.
This is my all time favorite shot because it took me 3 long years to get.

OMG, kathy just fainted… I want to capture this bird. awesome shot karen
Thanks Kathy, I am most pleased with this one, only because I have been trying so hard for so long, and I am also so upset for I took 40 to 50 shots, there are actually 3 of them, one to each side of this one. I wanted that close up so bad, and my camera just woul dnot focus for me today, so allot of them did not come out. I will up load the photo of the three tomorrow. I think this one is a bit over exposed , and I just dont have that lens I need to get the close up of just his face, awe someday….. Thanks again

Cool looking bird the dof is fine and the exposure is not to bad, dont you hate it when you want something so bad you you get so shakey and it doesnt come out right, but you did get a couple nice ones, fantastic capture Karen…gina
Yes and thanks for your wonderful comment. I just read my reply to Kathy back to myself and I think you and Kathy may have read it wrong, actually I wrote it wrong, I did not just 3 photos , Really only 2 came out that I think are ok, when I said 3 I meant there are 3 birds, one on the pole to each side of this one. So yes I was overly excited , and I was not thinking, I was just shooting, after I shot about 40 that when I relaxed a bit and took my time to get a few more. Only I still only got 2 photos I think are okay.

What an amazing looking bird, and very well done capturing with a 300mm lens. Lovely quality to this too.
Why thanks Phillips, I actually did a turn around on the road to catch this one. Shot from my jeep window for a bit then tried to get out to get a better one thats when he puffed up took tow shots then he flew away.

Congrats Karen on finally getting that encounter you desired! Beautiful picture too and you caught her on the “classic” post shot with the sun just right. It’s not always you get that perfect combination. Great job.
Yes thanks so much Franklin, it was early this morning if it would have been the other side of the road the sun would have been directly behind the birds. So yes finally perfect timing…. Thanks again
