I think the B&W works very well on this image.
The tonal range and contrast not only add mood to the scene but also strongly enhance the animal tracks and give the image a sense of the abstract.
Both work for me but I prefer this for the extra detail and unique result.

Spent last evening doing a few shots in the dunes just before sunset, always find different textures & shadows. This image has inspired me to keep on going back.
