the first nations believed they were kin with animals
specially prominent were bears, wolves, owls, crows, coyotes, rabbits, snakes, and in some areas, fish
this image is a tribute to bear clan and the rulers of the deep (octopus and squid)

the top animal on a totem pole (as I understand it) was often a reference to a family clan/animal believed to have been descended from… poles told stories but being on the bottom didn’t necessarily imply lower rank or insignificance. my totem image is a winged skull/bear at the top as i pay tribute to my own german ancestry and heritage. Below is a cephalopod, a squid here but part of a family of aquatic creatures i find fascinating. the night sky and the dark water are brought together by these two creatures. my love of the sea brought me to my current place and influenced me greatly so this piece is a mix of past and present, illustrating me…sort of a self portrait if you will.
