The Cape Griffon or Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres), also known as Kolbe’s Vulture,
is an Old World vulture in the family Accipitridae, which also includes eagles, kites,
buzzards and hawks. It is endemic to southern Africa, and is found mainly in
South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and in some parts of northern Namibia.
It nests on cliffs and usually lays one egg per year. They are on average the largest raptor in Africa, although they are subservient to the powerful Lappet-faced Vulture.
The species is listed by the IUCN as “Vulnerable”, the major problems it faces being poisoning, disturbance at breeding colonies and electrocution. The current population is estimated at 8,000

Terrific work, Mariann. He/She’s beautiful. I’ve never come across any other term for a young vulture other than fledgling, chick, or juvenile, but I think Robin’s “Cute Chick” should now be considered as the proper name.
Yes, I think so too: so it is officially a CUTE CHICK! ;) Thanks Delores!

Fantastic, I have only seen the full grown dark gray ones here in Missouri. They sit on the fence post along the road or come swooping at your windshield, scares the heck out you.
Hahaha, I’ve seen these only in the game reserves over here. Had seen some circling far above around town though. But never up close.
