Well, some of you may have noticed that Red Bubble has introduced RSS Feeds to our JE’s and our Portfolios :) VBS WELL DONE RED BUBBLE!!! I can’t wait for feeds on comments and a feed on our Activity Monitor.
For those of you unfamiliar with Feeds … You will notice when you look at someones Portfolio or JE’s now, you will see the little Feed symbol and the words subscribe to the left of it. What this means is that if you have a Feed Reader (I will mention those a little later) you can subscribe to a feed of that page and will be notified of any updates on that page at set intervals :) So now, rather than having to manually check to see if people have updated their Journal … or added new works …. you can have all the new stuff FEED right to you automatically :)
Okay … my Feed Reader of Choice is called OMEA but I have a fairly fast system with 2Gig of Ram, so for me it’s not a problem to run. It’s a very big program and takes up a LOT of resources. Anyway … I thought I would try another Lighter Feed reader from a LIST of Ten. I am currently testing RSS Bandit and as far as I can tell so far it’s a great program for keeping up in RB :) I have added the Forums .. and also added Whirli to test …. all works really well :) :) Thanks Whirli ;)
You can even send comments from within the program (on Journal Entries or works) so there is no need to flip back and forth from RB in your browser and the Feed Reader :) I haven’t looked at all the options in there yet, but so far it’s doing a good job of basically keeping me informed. It will take a while to add and categorize everyone … but once done .. adding new people will be easy and I will no longer need to manually check in RB for peoples updates etc :)
I’ll leave this JE now …. if anyone is interested in using RSS Bandit … I can add to this to help you set it up … most other Programs would run similar so any instructions here would probably help with those too :) :)
Happy RSS’ing :) :) VBS

hmmm… all sounds very technical to me now, sure it’s a great thing though :)
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Hehehe It’s not that technical Jess … sorta just like an email program on your ‘puter that delivers your emails … rather than you having to go on the WWW and log in and check for them yourself :) Just gives you more time to comment and look :) :)
Helene Kippert, about 1 year ago
Thanks for the explanation Craig. I’ll favourite it and come beck to it later. :o)

jeepers!! It sure does sound technical!! but a fantastic explantation Craig, thank you :D
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
No probs Helene :) I will probably add more to this Journal Entry later on as a guide to setting up and using RSS Bandit … depends on if people start using it and ask I guess :)
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Awwwwww No worries Lee :) Everything helps eh .. .I just like things to be easy LMAO

At the entry level end of RSS, you can use services like MyYahoo. Adding a RB feed to MyYahoo is just like adding news headlines from a newspaper.
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Yeah I should have added that to the JE eh Xavier. ;) Most modern browsers have RSS readers built into them too. Very simple ones. And Google has an online reader as well.

You know, I’ve been blogging for years. But, I could never work out the significance of ATOM and RSS feeds. So lots of people use them then?
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
I don’t think generally people know much about them K, no. I do because they make life so much easier, especially for places like Flickr and RB. I don’t like the simples ones that come with browsers .. .and I don’t like the online ones … simply because I would rather have everything feed to my computer. I guess we should note here too that RB is using ATOM not RSS too. Not a heap of difference though, for the average person to worry about :)

Helen McLean, about 1 year ago
Yes, thanks for the explanation! I knew it was good for some reason – but had no idea how to use it to it’s fullest potential. I think I’ll give it a burl (sp?).
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
VBS no worries Helen …. if you find it really hard to set up … let me know and I will add a walk through here (for RSS Bandit anyway), to make it easier :)
Helen McLean, about 1 year ago
Wow, setting up was easy and I can see how fantastic this app will turn out to be. Is there anything else in life I should know about?!! The only problem is that your journal update is giving a timeout error. I’ll wait and see if it continues. I downloaded RSS Bandit.
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Awwwww :) Good onya Helen … Amazing how much easier RSS makes life eh ;) Sometimes pages will time out (just like real time when you click on them and they take forever to load) so just go to the actual feed in RSS Bandit (not the timed out Error one) and right click and update (the JE itself) .... then when it updates you can delete it out the timed out section :) :)
I can’t wait for RSS on our Activity Monitor and RSS on comments :) Wooohooooo :)
Helen McLean, about 1 year ago
It worked! I’m writing this in the application now! WooHoo!
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Hehehehehe {{{hugs}}} You seem excited Helen ;) :P :P VBS
Helen McLean, about 1 year ago
Yes I am – although it may mean I’ll be doing less work now (Arghhh). Now, I have to ask, as you always seem to use it – what is VBS? Very Brillant Shillington? Very Bright Shine? VooDoo Beckons SesameStreet?
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
HAHAHA Stop it!! LMAO {giggle} Oh my cheeks!! LOL YA DAG!!
Very Brilliant Shillington … Hmmmmm .. .sounds good eh :P LOL
Nah …. VBS is Very Big Smile :) :D:D:D

I like that VooDoo Beckons SesameStreet!! Excellent work, Helen LOL.
I think I need to fave this one and return with braincells intact.
Hey Craig, can you tell me offhand whether it’d work in dialup? I had trouble with the Yahoo version and had to revert to Ye Olde Yahoo… there’s only so long I’m willing to watch a whirling cartoon figure on my screen.
Thanks very much for the lesson, BTW. Loving these acronyms, eh.
Craig Shillington, about 1 year ago
Hehehe VBS ….. lmao whatever you want it to be ;) Hahaha
Alison … sadly … anything that checks online from time to time will really effect your dialup speed and other things you are doing online at the time. Sorta just like when you are doing something and you check your email and everything grinds to a slow pace. RSS updating is just like checking your email (if you use Outlook Express or similar). The more feeds you have in the Reader … the more often it is going to check. The only way I could suggest around this would be to load and run the RSS program a few times a day when you have the time to let it check. That way you will have checked and downloaded changes and can look and delete or mark things you want to comment on when you are offline.

Cool. Thanks mate. You are a living version of Wikipedia :)

im a rss noob, i dont see the rss feed option on any of my redbubble pages? :(
Sleek Images, 9 months ago
Hey Craig… I use Feedreader myself and am too lazy to change…
One question about Redbubble’s RSS feeds… How do you find out what the link address is for the various feeds that are active??? I have the one for the forums, but how do you find out the link for journal entries etc.?
Most websites have a little RSS logo with a link, but RedBubble doesn’t seem to…
Craig Shillington, 9 months ago
Hi Atrei and Leek. As far as I know at the moment there are RSS Feeds on peoples Art and Journal Pages. I haven’t checked the other pages since they have been introduced. Sadly RB doesn’t show the RRS Icon on those pages that have it. But any good read will be able to find any RSS Feeds if you simply put the URL of the page in the add options within the reader itself. So to add my Art Page to your Feed reader for example, just copy the http://www.redbubble.com/people/crackers1967/art Url into the Add section of your Reader and hopefully it will find and add the feed for you :) Just try that on the other pages as well and see how you go :)

Hi!
I would like to convert something to read RSS from here, not another site. How would I go about doing that?
Craig Shillington in reply to MrHyde’s comment, 6 months ago
Hi Mr Hyde …. I am not too sure exactly what you mean???
Gail Bridger, 2 months ago
How can I add matted pictures and framed pictures to my profile, I see some RBer’s have done that ?
Craig Shillington in reply to Gail Bridger’s comment, 2 months ago
Hi Gail …. have a read of this first, but if it’s still confusing send me a Bubble mail okay? :)
