Disappointed... by Christophe Testi

Posted on May 05, 2009

I haven’t been much active with Redbubble but since I did not have a sale for almost 2 months I came back to check the all time most popular images, and what a surprise, my best seller is no longer in the top 10 of all time.

So I checked on page 1, 2, 3… 30, nothing!

My picture that has more than 12,600 views went from top#7 (for almost 2 years) to not even top 300!!! It just disappeared :(

I could understand that a tweak in search engine make things fluctuate, but the change seems too extreme. My images are losing exposure and I’m not getting sales anymore, I’m very disappointed.

Anyone else noticed the same thing?

I don’t have the views or sales you have but there does seem to be a noticeable drop in views and/or exposure. I’ve wondered if there’s some phenomenon or “tipping point” that seems to be going on. It seems the more people there are on the site – the less individuals matter and thus, less attention to go around. No scientific or concrete evidence, just a theory with no way to conclusively prove it. Bottom line, I don’t think you’re alone.

You are correct. The ranking system has never made sense and doesn’t seem to be a priority. Also the competition is much greater in the last year.

The problem is that you have too many tags on the work – the more tags the more the rank of the image is diluted across all the tags. I would recommend reducing the number of tags to those directly relevant to the image and I think you’ll find the image pops back up.

  • Christophe Testi:

Hi Peter, tags are always tricky, but I tried to remove all the non essential ones. We’ll see what happen. Thanks for your post!

  • Christophe Testi:

It does not look like tags were the problem, I just kept 20, directly related to the picture, and still nothing.

I still can’t understand how my image went from #7 to nowhere, not even in the #300 :(

I dont’ think the popular gallery is based on sales at all but purely comments and favourites. I only have one image appearing in the “most popular – all time” and it has made no sales but has lots of comments and favourites. None of my images that have sold multiple copies appear in the galleries. None of the galleries seem to be based on sales, it is purely, as the tab suggests, popularity.
There is definately something strange going on, just 4 or 5 pages in one the 1-day tab and it starts to look like a flickr junkyard.
Peters comment re tags is interesting, looking at some of the images in the 1-day gallery, they have none to maybe 5 tags!
I’ve also noticed that none of my work for the last couple of weeks has shown up in any of the galleries, it just disappears into the abyss, regardless of comments, favourites, etc and I only seem to get comments from those that have me on their watchlist.

Hmm … the rank has popped back up with the tag changes but it’s still not in the top 30 pages. We occasionally make tweaks to the ranking algorithm where we change the weight between comments, sales, favourites et cetera. But nothing that would explain this change. When did you notice it?

  • Christophe Testi:

    Hi Peter,

Last time I checked was on 23 Mar 2009, it was #7 at that time. Then few weeks later it completely disappeared! Since then I did not get any more sale of this bestseller. I currently have

    • 12 sales
    • 384 favoritings
    • 13200 views
I’d really appreciate that my picture be treated fairly. My portfolio is losing visibility and potential sales. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  • Christophe Testi:

Also I noticed that on the last few pages of all time favorites, some pictures/illustration barely have 50 comments. There must be a serious bug in the new ranking algorithm, it does not make any sense anymore.

Comments are only one factor that is taken into consideration. Other things that are factored in are sales, favourites, et cetera. Many of these other factors are not publicly displayed – so it’s hard to extrapolate from this one data point.
