oh my he gives me the goose bumps fantastic shot well done
Pete Costick replied
Thanks Karen, looks a bit frightening at this magnification doen’t it, but this photo covers about 2.5mm real life width, so it’s a tiny little spider really.
karen Bradshaw

Love it ! very cool macro, again nice and close. :-)
Looking into his eye and back out at you gear I got interested in you lighting, looks like you’ve 2 flash units. I’ve just mounted my 430 and 580 in what looks like similar arrangement.
Pete Costick replied
Hi Darren, thanks for your comments. I’ve been looking at your work and am very impressed. I see, like me, you’ve got a number of jumping spider photos. This shot used four small manual flash guns (Sunpak GN 14 & 20 and Starblitz GM 16 & 20 with built in slaves). Two at very close range on the subject, that show as reflections in the eyes, plus two to light the blue background. One flash linked to the camera and the other three fired on slaves.

Vikram Franklin
Whoa – at that range, I’m sure he winked :-) Lovely detail and thanks for explaining your lighting set-up. Learnt a bit more on lighting. Will go spider-hunting and join Arachnids once I have a few under my belt.
Pete Costick replied
Hi Vikram, many thanks. I was only just reading your details on lighting in response to Shelly. Very impressed with your lighting techniques and like the DIY approach. By the way, I took this some years ago on film and have have since moved to Nikon’s wireless flash system and DSLR, although still do sometimes use multiple manual flash too. With the ability to review on digital cameras, you can quite lterally paint light with multiple flash guns.

Well I AM a BIG fan of spiders – I love ‘em. And I love this one – superb shot. It could wink three eyes at the same time and still keep one beady eye on you! Amazing creatures!

Does a spider have 4 eyes?
Pete Costick replied
Hi Yuri, thanks for taking a look :) No, this little chat has 8 eyes, as do most spiders. The other two pairs are on the side of the head, follow this link to another pic of this same spider, better showing the other side mounted eyes.
