I vaguely remember something from years back about a particular model of Telstra handset causing this type of problem – it had a cyclic charge which (don’t quote me) caused enough voltage variation on the line for a sensitive modem to drop the connection. Even if you don’t have a Telstra handset, you might want to disconnect all other devices from the line (eg. handsets, faxes, answering machines, etc) and test your modem connection to see if this resolves the problem. If it does, then you can progressively reconnect each device and test to see if you can isolate which is the problem device. Or you might just have a poor line (if so, you might be able to hear noise/crackle on the line via your telephone handset). Your telecommunications provider might be able to test the line quality remotely. Also, it might be call waiting (incoming call) causing the modem to drop out – it is all coming back to me now!! There was a key sequence you could put into the modem initialisation string to disable call waiting for the duration of the modem connection….

You’re right – 56k is pretty untenable, particularly with large image uploads/downloads.

    Hope you solve your problem!
