THE BOOK OF LIFE

I come to you
arms laden with masks,
paper thin
and translucent,
pages of my delusions
laid out before you,
stripped in the truth
of my own eyes,
peeled back with shaking hands,
shedding
cosmetic layers
of youthful folly
and self praise.
Naked I stand
with this final veneer
of my soul,
in a desert of dreams
where the sands erode
all mirages seen,
and my identities
played in this theatre
are all laid to rest.
This mask
I now wear
is the last one I’ve got,
I cannot peel it further back,
only Death
can now uncover
this final illusion.

The mask metaphor is one of my favorites…and this prose of your Cos reminds us the finality of life is indeed the final mask to shed….So to be near as naked as we can possibly be without shedding our life skin is the task some braver souls undertake to do….
I think that if we are to at least name some of our masks we can feel that we have succeeded …I guess there are some amazing people in life who can take off their disguises….rare I believe and then there is the usual mottle crew of us that do the best we can.
Somedays the mask comes off and we have a sense of more of us….and then it sneaks back on while we slumber.
All’s good me thinks….I kinda feel for those that do not even have a clue that they are laden down in spirit and heart with masks ….they don’t breathe life the same way with all the clutter on xxx
You are the mask awaken prose master me in this Cos… ;O) xxx

  • KarenSue…as usual your comments are like posts and I love the insight they carry….even comments to others are enjoyable to read. I agree with you that it takes a special person to strip their masks…..I always carry a few spares in my back pocket….for the more awkward situations…..if one is aware though then the masks become a minor issue and lose their hold. As usual K, a pleasure stretching the old grey matter with you. xoxo

    This is brilliant Cos..
The removal of masks; the only way to live joy and peace…to fully enjoy
    relationship with people too.
Sad to go through life in ’ roles ’ covering up, not knowing one’s real self,
deceptive which every way you look at it.
Happy is to be happy in one’s skin :) and truly, the conscious breath is essential.
    love

  • masks….we all have worn them or still wear them….stripping back the layers for some is a painful ordeal because of years of hiding….I agree that full joy comes from facing one’s true self and to feel comfortable in ones own skin, and it’s a great feeling when it happens. Many thanks Del. xoxo
