FEAR YOU NOT

Two days ago I went to the funeral of a most remarkable lady. 92 years old and lived a full and generous life. Her name Hilde Knorr….author, artist, activist. After the funeral I went to visit my niece and her new born son. His name Archer. Full circle, so this poem was born.

I do not fear you, Death,
nor do I welcome you,
although I have heard your cold whispers
in dark times.
I do not consider you as my friend,
nor are you my enemy,
although many loves of mine you
have embraced.
You are that silent companion,
life long,
constantly by my side,
caressing, from time to time
my soul within.
I will not ignore you,
nor invite you in.
I will not push you aside,
nor hold you close to feel your breath.
I do not know what you want of me,
or to what place you have awaiting,
nor do I know
when you will pluck me
from that tree of Life.
This does not concern me.
I do know, however,
that before that final day comes,
and my last kiss is yours,
I will taste the sweet, bitter fruits
of Life.
I do not fear you, Death,
for
Life has my total attention.

Brilliant. Only an idiot FEARS death, rather than fearing a wasted life!

Too true. Read your piece on Entropy and liked the way you described that state. Appreciate you taking the time to read my piece and commenting.

First, thanks so much for your response to my “Dad 2.” My father is indeed ailing at age 89, and poetry like yours can bring him and all of us courage and strength. My dad loves poetry, loved to recite it aloud. He’s not able to read now but he would respond enthusiastically to yours if he could. Thanks again.

  • cosimopiro replied

Thanks Peter. All very encouraging. Much appreciate your time in reading and responding. Best wishes to you and your father. Cheers

Hey there Shoaib. Thanks for your time and input. Yeah funerals have a way of opening up all manner of things…..no matter how many you go to it’s always a sobering experience. One thing we all got in common my friend. Cheers mate.

This is brilliant. this is living! fear is death.
I have never understood those afraid of death. I have zero fear of passing over, into and onwards. none.
it is living each day as if it were my last, I have trouble with. :)
    beautiful poetry.

  • cosimopiro replied

Great to hear Kristin and thanks for the comment. Living each day is living with whatever you need to deal with on a daily basis. Good, bad, or indifferent….if we make it our goal to learn as much as possible about ourselves and pass that on to others we transcend the troubles. Well, it’s a theory anyway. Cheers.

Thanks mate. One of my stronger moments. This living thing gets easier to do when death loses its power of fear. Keep up the good work
