This painting was inspired by Stuart Fellowes’ replica bronze Celtic cross model.
The Celtic cross is the characteristic symbol of Celtic Christianity, though it may have older pre-Christian origins as a “sun cross” in pagan Northern Europe. This type of cross also became the mark of the Norse God, Odin.
The Christian cross came into being around the 7th century and is found all over the Celtic lands of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Cornwall.
The painting depicts a group of Celtic craftsmen making bronze castings in a forest clearing. After hours of polishing, the finished piece is held to the light for the first time.
