This heroic sculpture depicts George Washington as a Roman emperor, a popular European tradition for representing political and military leaders. Two Italian sculptors, Giuseppe Ceracchi and Massimiliano Ravenna, made this marble sculpture around 1819. It was photographed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
