Martin Luther King Memorial by

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will be dedicated this Sunday, October 16, 2011, in Washington, D.C., with an estimated quarter of a million people in attendance. The memorial will be dedicated by Barack Obama, the first African-American President.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is the most famous civil rights leader in United States history, and became a martyr for the cause when he was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968.

The memorial is on the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial where King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech nearly fifty years ago. It is the first major memorial on the mall for a man who was never President of the United States. This is fitting because if King had lived, he may very well have become our first African-American President.
