Of all the things I told my parents I wanted to be when I grew up, I never said an elephant. But then they never took me to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., because if they had I would have taken one look at the gigantic elephant inside the main entrance and anxiously asked them how long before I start growing tusks. In retrospect, it’s a good thing we didn’t go down that road when I was an adolescent . . .
