The first columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery opened in 1980 with a capacity of 5,000 niches. Today due largely to increasingly limited land space in the cemetery more than half of the services are for cremated remains. There are now nine columbarium structures in the cemetery with approximately 45,000 niches available, which will rise to 50,000 when the tenth columbarium which is under construction is completed. This photograph is of the first columbarium built in 1980.
