I would like to thank Christine Till for nominating this photograph for the “Pay It Forward” group.

This is what Christine wrote about the photograph:

”I would like to nominate Cora Wandel’s powerful and intense image Gently into the Grave as a reminder, that Christmas time is not a time of joy for everyone.

We can go on about politics, but at this time so close to Christmas: Let’s take a moment and think about the families that have somebody they love missing this Christmas and send our heartfelt condolences to the children, parents, grandparents, spouses and friends of soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice. All they have left is the memories of Christmases past. It must be heart wrenching.

Christmas is an especially difficult time for all soldiers of the world and the families they left at home. We owe these people more than we can ever re-pay."

Thank you Christine!

One of your best, you catch the feeling and the moment in this shot. Down turned heads in honor. Lovely.

A touching moment. It took me a few seconds to work out what the airman (?) had on the back of his head. Was it really that cold?

  • I think the muffs and head pieces were more for show than necessity, this shot was taken in April, and I am the first one to put on gloves if it is chilly, but I did not have gloves with me that day. Thank you for appreciating this photo, it is one of my favorites, as a resident of Washington, D.C., my favorite place in the area is Arlington National Cemetery. – Cora

Beautiful, tender and evocative. These kind of shots fulfil the “tells a thousand words” category. I don’t know who this poor soul was but the photograph represents a tribute to every soldier fallen in battle. Well done and good on you for having the courage to take the photo and share it with us.

  • Simon, thank you for appreciating this photo, I live near this cemetery and have great respect for what I see there, even if it is through the lens of my camera. People have made great sacrifices for this country, and I do everything I can to keep people aware of this. I really do appreciate your comment. – Cora
