Designed to evoke the spirit of flight and flying, the United States Air Force Memorial honors the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Air Force. The memorial is the newest major memorial in the Washington, D.C. area, having opened on October 14, 2006. This photograph of the memorial was taken from Arlington National Cemetery.

Such complement and contrast both to this memorial that you have given with your choice of vantage point, spirit springing up from the muted light on stones. Great composition on this scene and this moment, Cora. Great image to begin with. —Tim

fitting.
Thank you, I was away from Washington for a year or so and when I returned this memorial had been constructed. Because it is very close, if not actually on the grounds of, the Pentagon, for the longest time I thought it was a memorial to the 9/11 victims of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. But I could not reconcile the design with what I thought the memorial was for. I was certainly corrected one day when I walked to the memorial and found out it was for the Air Force! Oh well, there are so many memorials in this city I get confused by them all. Thank you for commenting on this one. – Cora

Wow – This is beautiful. What a poignant capture of this memorial, I’ve never seen this before.. Strange how you see the structure in the centre and are awed by it and is your eye follows the lines down the image that feeling turns to sadness and rememberance.
Beautiful image.
Thank you. I live near Arlington National Cemetery and frequently walk over there. There are a couple of places I have been where I have felt I am on sacred land, truly felt it, and this cemetery is one of those places. Thank you for appreciating this photo. – Cora

Cora, this is so beautiful. I would love to see it in person. I am a member of the Women’s War Memorial. I really want to go there and see it and also to see my name there. I was in the Air Force for several years. This is one of my favorite pictures of all. xo
Thank you Lori, hopefully you will make it back here to see this memorial and so many other wonder things in the Washington, D.C. area. I thought you told me you were in the Air Force, so this memorial is for you!
