An Oculus

An Oculus

I am not an architect, and after taking this photograph in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., I had trouble finding the term for this circular opening between two floors. I asked several attendants but no one knew the architectural term for it. Finally I was directed to a young man walking down the hall, he took one look at the photo on my camera and said, “Oh, that’s an oculus.” As I struggled with how to spell “oculus”, he politely told me how to spell it and then went on to say “oculus means round, it is Latin for the word eye, and as an architectural term it is basically anything that is round that you can see through, such as a round window, or this circular cut between two floors.” I thanked him and started to leave but a bewildered look came over his face. “Wait a second”, he said, “that is not an oculus, now that I think about it, that’s an . . . “ but before he could finish the sentence someone told him he was wanted down in the cafeteria where he worked, so he hastened away and I was left befuddled. When I got home I looked up the word “oculus” and I think that is what this is a photograph of, but then again . . .

If you took this hand held, then you’ve got a steadier hand than I Cora. Surprisingly sharp for such low light, and interesting composition to boot. Well done.

    kev

  • Cora Wandel replied

Kev, I did take this hand held. As for a steadier hand, I have Parkinson’s Disease and my hands are not steady, but getting a stabilization lens and holding the camera very tight every time I take a photo is how I work around my trembling hands. Thank you for the compliment, looks like the special lens and tightening my grip as hard as I can is doing the job.

  • bidkev

Love this one….and the education it brings with it. An oculus…who knew? Nicely captured too…. what lens did you use for this one?

  • Cora Wandel replied

Thank you Wendi. I bought a new Canon Rebel last spring, and my concern with the lens was that because I have Parkinson’s Disease a lot of my photography is blurred, so the lens that I had put on the new camera is a stabilization lens and that is all I use when taking photos because it really works, rarely are my photos blurred whereas it used to be a constant nuisance.

  • Wendi Donaldson
